Physical therapists are movement experts who improve quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care, and patient education. They are doctoral-level trained professionals who have passed both national and state level examination to be license to treat.
Physical therapists diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to people at the end of life. Many patients have injuries, disabilities, or other health conditions that need treatment. But PTs also care for people who simply want to become healthier and to prevent future problems.
Physical therapists examine each person and then develop a treatment plan to improve their ability to move, reduce or manage pain, restore function, and prevent disability.
You may receive a physical therapy referral because of a movement dysfunction associated with pain. Your difficulty with moving parts of your body (like bending at the lower back or difficulty sleeping on your shoulder, etc.) very likely results in limitations with your daily activities, such as getting out of a chair, an inability to play sports, or trouble with walking. Physical therapists treat these movement dysfunctions and their associated pains and restore your body's ability to move normally.
You should wear loose-fitting clothing to expose the area we will be evaluating and treating. For example, if you have a knee problem, it is best to wear shorts or sweats. A T-shirt or tank top are good choices for a shoulder problem, while a loose-fitting shirt and pants are suitable for lower back problems.
You can expect to talk with your physical therapist about your overall health, the specific condition you are being seen for, your home or work environment, your health habits and activity level, and your leisure and recreational interests.
Your physical therapist will complete an examination, including evaluating your strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and posture. We want to help you to be as active and independent as possible. Together, you and your physical therapist will determine goals for your physical therapy.
This varies highly on each individual. You may need one visit, or you may need months of care. It depends on your diagnosis, impairment severity, past medical history, etc. You will be re-evaluated regularly, and we will provide you with a progress report with our recommendations.
